The Board of Directors for the 2014-2015 Lions Year has been elected at our Members Meeting last night. The following members were elected to our board to commence their positions on 01 July 2014 for a period of 12 months.

Lions Membership Month Article

The Lions Club of Brighton is part of a truly global service organisation with over 45,500 clubs and more than 1.35 million members in 205 countries around the world, Lions Clubs International.

We are dedicated to making our communities a better place to live, work and grow. With like-minded people we provide real change and create opportunities in our communities.

As the Lions Club of Brighton approaches the second anniversary of its charter, members can look back at a solid two years of fundraising and contribution to the community.

Using our super BBQ trailer, Lions have run BBQ’s for community groups and for organisations to raise funds for community activities. You may have seen us at the Brighton Civic Centre (opening of the Bypass and at Communities for Children), Brighton Community Market, Royal Hobart Regatta (wood-chopping) or Vodafone in Kingston, amongst other various places we have visited.

Lions fundraising often comes in partnership with another organisation, for instance staffing the entrances to the Royal Agricultural Show, Tasmanian Racing Club and the Hobart Sporting Car Club.

The Lions Club of Brighton is most proud of our work in producing the first Christmas Carols event in Brighton for many years.

Brighton Lions partnered with the Citywide Baptist Church, with assistance from Lions Club of Kingborough, Hazell Bros, Brighton Council and PDK Systems, to stage Christmas Carols at the Thompson Oval at Pontville late last year.

A crowd of close to 1000 backed by the Derwent Valley Concert Band, Twice Bitten and the Citywide Baptist Church Band sang popular Christmas carols into the evening. Entertainers from the Citywide Baptist Church led events for young people while the Brighton Fire Brigade delivered Santa and a huge bag of sweets!

Planning is already underway for Christmas Carols to return this year in mid December.

The Lions Club of Brighton is always looking for new members, the more we have the more we can do.

Membership involves attending a couple of meetings, paying a modest membership fee and then regular attendance at monthly meetings.

At Lions we make things happen. One more member gives us two more hands.

Penny Winch gets inducted
It was with great pleasure that I should become the sponsor for Penny Winch, a colleague of mine for about 7 years, at Monday’s club meeting.

Penny becomes our 6th new member in 4 months, an amazing effort from all of the Moneygram money transfer sponsors involved.

Membership renewal is such an important part of any Lions club and to have so many new members in such a short amount of time will bring new ideas, fresh views and renewed vitality to the club.
